Note to applicants (January 2011)
We have announced some changes to current funding schemes in our Delivery Plan 2011-2015. Potential applicants to this scheme should note that we will be integrating the large grants and centres competitions later in 2011. More information is to follow once confirmed.
The research centres competition usually takes place on an annual basis. There is not a competition for 2010-11.
ESRC research centres:
are national focal points for social science research where academics can collaborate on long-term projects;are typically located within a single institution. Dual or multi-site applications are encouraged but will need to demonstrate the added value of such an arrangement and that the other requirements set out will be met;facilitate the building of strong relationships with research users and the development of the careers of new and outstanding researchers;are central to the ESRC's strategy to develop the UK social science research base and strengthen its position on the international stage; andare appropriate where long term investment is justified in terms of the topic, the intellectual challenges and the needs of the research team.Research centres, with their extended period of support and greater resources, are expected to:
provide training for postgraduate students and other new researchers where appropriate; andseek opportunities for securing co-funding or sponsorship from sources outside the Science Vote.Centres funding is normally for five years in the first instance, with a second period of five years' funding subject to a satisfactory midterm review.
